The East Tennessee Historical Society offers a variety of teacher workshops in various topics, formats, and times.  All programs are rich in content and methods instruction and are correlated to meet or exceed state curriculum requirements.

Tennessee State Library & Archives Partnership:

Teaching with Primary Sources MTSU Partnership 2018-2019 Workshop Dates:

Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) workshops introduce teachers to the rich digital collection of documents, records, and photos available through the Library of Congress website.  TPS workshops are scheduled periodically and in various locations in the region and state.  Watch for notices and check back with us to learn about upcoming dates.

As the regional TPS facilitator, ETHS works under the direction of the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University, who administers the workshops for Tennessee and is a state affiliate of the Teaching with Primary Sources program.

    This workshop will explore strategies and resources for teaching the social studies practices, with a special emphais on context and anazlysis. The workshop will feature standards-based activities and materials ready for immediate classroom use.

Workshops are held from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 South Gay Street in downtown Knoxville (across from the Tennessee Theatre) unless otherwise noted.  Materials, lunch, travel stipend and certificate of participation are provided.

Seats Still Available: Teacher to Teacher Social Studies Standards Discussions

Date just added! July 13 at Tipton Haynes State Historic Site, Johnson City: 9 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. for 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 8th grades and for teachers of the new Tennessee history high school course. See description below for more details.

The East Tennessee Historical Society invites area educators to participate in a series of focused discussions on the NEW Tennessee Social Studies Standards, which will be rolled out in Fall 2019. Participating teachers will guide the discussion and share ideas for addressing new Tennessee history content for their grade level and integrating the social studies practices.

Each session will:

  • Focus on standards and content from a specific grade level.
  • Address the Tennessee history standards specifically.
  • Have limited seating to allow for productive discussion.

Full Day Teaching Tennessee History Workshops

7 hour workshops will focus on primary-source-rich, hands-on strategies for addressing key Tennessee history stories found in the current and new social studies standards. Teachers, academic coaches, and museum educators are welcome to attend. Content from grades 3-5, 8 and 11 will be used in activities, but methods can be adapted for all grades. Revolutionary War, Antebellum Slavery, Civil War Secession and Union, Child Labor, and Women's Suffrage are key content areas highlighted. Host community stories will also be featured.
