April 26, 1864
On this day in 1864, John Schofield, later Secretary of War, tersely telegraphed his chief of staff, "I do not want any more rebel women in Knoxville," and in August Samuel P. Carter, Union general, asked Major John McGaughy, deputy provost marshal of McMinn County, to send the names of all the women, "who are still open in their expression of disloyalty."
