The World’s Fair opens in Knoxville on this day in 1982 with the theme “Energy Turns the World.” The exposition attracted over 11 million visitors.

May 1, 1890
On this day in 1890, Knoxville’s first electric streetcar debuted with a procession of cars carrying important citizens from Gay Street to Lake Ottosee in East Knoxville.
