Life On a Civil War Battlefield

As soon as the war began, thousands of men volunteered believing their side would win quickly. Some even worried that the war would be over before they got a chance to fight. The majority of these volunteers had no military training. Life on the battlefield was often harsh, with little food or supplies, especially in the Confederate army. With so many people in close contact, camps were breeding grounds for disease.
