John Webb Green

John Webb Green, Knoxville bar leader and Tennessee Supreme Court Justice, was born in 1859 near Oxford, Mississippi. In 1879, he came to Knoxville to practice law. During his long career here, he was a partner in eight law firms.

Green was a trustee of the Knoxville library from its founding in 1885 and also served as chairman of the Knoxville Board of Education and president of the Knoxville County Bar Association. He wrote books on his world travels and biographies of Tennessee Supreme Court judges.

When Green died at the age of 97, he bequeathed money to the University of Tennessee for a museum that would be named for his father-in-law, Frank H. McClung.
